Sites For Sore Eyes

Heartbreaking. The following comes from historian Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter:

“The administration ignored the law on Saturday, when it felled more than 400 trees on the East Potomac Golf Links course that Trump wants to turn into another of his projects.

“U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes had previously warned the administration not to make any irreversible changes to the landscape, but she did not forbid it from doing maintenance work. The administration maintains the Saturday cutting was routine maintenance. Reyes was furious, telling the administration’s lawyers she didn’t know how she could have made it any clearer that she was trying to stop it from doing precisely what it did. She warned that the government had lost all credibility with her. The administration’s lawyer said they still planned to cut several hundred more trees.”

Here’s a small part of the “maintenance work.” Five hundred trees have been felled.

Our Phil is out on assignment in Rome and has just filed this report:

“Pope Pissed At God Over White Sox, Cancer”

The Vatican, October 15. The feeling running through the halls of the Vatican these days is, in general, “What the f*ck, God?” . . .

My “work” on today’s puzzle:

Did you get the answer for 4D? You look like you’ve seen AGHAST.

Online list of ophthalmologists: SITES for sore eyes.

What should I do with these barges? TOTEM.

OK, and what about those small wheatfields out back? Weed ’em and REAP.

In bed last night:

Me: How come we can close our eyes but nothing else?

Linda: That’s profound.

Yikes. The Dodgers are reeling. We just watched the Brewers take Game 3 in LA after falling behind 2-1 in the sixth. As an insurance run for Milwaukee crossed the plate on a wild pitch, I said to Linda “the wheels are coming off the bus.” It ain’t over, of course, but the Dodgers look old. Special kudos today to Jake Bauers who seems like he can foul pitches off ad infinitum until he walks or gets one he can drive. And reliever DL (Dayton Lane) Hall who was “lights out” when things looked a little shaky. They’re a very likable team, playing with a lot of confidence. It’s like parking spots — if you believe there’s one around the corner, there will goddamn be one around the corner.

We’ll keep it short today, and finish with a “musical coda” I am shamelessly stealing from a recent Paul Krugman newsletter. Word of this band hadn’t reached me under my rock. They’re Scottish.

Here’s a shot Phil got for us of vocalist Lauren Mayberry.

Thanks for dropping in! See you tomorrow!
